I took the helm of MacDougall Financial (MFC) in 2008 after working closely with the founding partner for many years. I am a firm believer that it is important to take a holistic approach to financial well-being as it impacts all areas of our lives. As President, my job is to know our clients’ needs and goals in order to help them succeed financially and personally.
In addition to our core investment management business, I serve as trustee on revocable Trusts and Foundations. We review Trusts, draft and act as an executor on Wills, and offer advice on all financial matters. These include, but are not limited to: foundations/charitable giving, retirement planning, family planning, mortgages/home ownership, goals based investing, and private market investments.
I began my career in 1973 with Mellon Bank, working in a variety of departments including international management, credit analysis, trust services, retail operations, and investment management. Due to my linguistic abilities (German, Spanish, French, Portugese, and Italian), After several years Mellon transferred me to Brazil to lead their southern Latin American region, managing over $400MM.My financial career continued when I went to work in Sydney for the Bank of Boston and then for PNC Bank. Both positions involved lending, credit analysis, and asset management skills. Upon my return to the US, I was the CFO for Berkeley Process Control, a tech company based in northern California. Wanting to be closer to my family, I later accepted the position of CFO/COO for Creative Products International in Pittsburgh. Each of these unique experiences has strengthened my knowledge of the industry and contributed to my success at MFC.
My personal life has also shaped my approach to financial management. While I was born and raised near Pittsburgh, I’ve had no shortage of adventure throughout the world. My wife, Anne Montgomery, and I are avid sailors and raised our children, James and Elizabeth, with sea legs of their own. At the end of my years in Brazil with Mellon we bought a sailboat in Buenos Aires, sparking a 17 year circumnavigation. I am very fortunate to have sailed the Atlantic by myself, the Pacific with my lovely wife, the Indian Ocean with our growing family and then finally the Atlantic with the four of us. While the wind blew my family around the world, forming connections and maintaining relationships with the people we met was among our top priorities; a priority that is still highly valued at MFC.
Outside of finance, I am on the board of the Children's Institute of Pittsburgh and the Ligonier Highland Games. I also support my local church and world wide environmental organizations as well as my alma maters, St. Paul’s School and Stanford. For more information, please call or email me. I am happy to speak about my personal life as well as my investment career.
